Presque Isle Testing New System Today

August 19, 2012

I was monitoring the scanner this afternoon (Sunday) and heard what sounded like radio testing being done on the new crosspatch system at Presque Isle. The testing was involving the rangers and was on 151.445. Prior to today, I still heard rangers on the old main freq of 151.4, which is now designated as the lifeguard channel. However, it sounds like rangers are getting close to being operational on 151.445, via the Starnet/VHF crosspatch system. It sounds like a ranger is driving around the park and asking the base for radio checks from various locations. The ranger base has been answering on what sounds like 800 MHZ, and the ranger on VHF. As I listened, the ranger is now also operating on 800 MHZ. The audio on VHF is crystal clear and flawless, quite impressive for digital audio.

I have so far not heard anything on the other two designated channels for the park, but now will keep an eye on them.
